Immigrant Visa Processing is Paused… Here's What That Actually Means (and Doesn't)
If you've seen the headlines this week about the State Department pausing visa processing, and you’re feeling a bit panicked…. that’s fair, but take a breath and let's get specific, because the rumor wheel is spinning vigorously, and it is not accurate.
What's Actually Being Paused
The pause applies to immigrant visas only , this means that it applies only to those that lead to a green card (or permanent residency). This particular pause does not affect nonimmigrant visas. If you're here on a work visa, a student visa, or a visitor/tourist visa, this pause doesn't touch your status or your processing timeline. Those categories are moving normally.
This distinction gets lost fast on social media, and it's the single most important thing to understand before you panic about something that may not even apply to you.
Why This Feels Familiar
If you've been in this space for a while, this isn't the first time immigrant visa processing has come to a stop. In 2020, immigrant visas were paused for close to a year under a presidential proclamation tied to the pandemic and labor market concerns. It was extended a few times, then ultimately lifted in early 2021.
This pause is expected to only last until mid-September, to allow time for intensive training around new public charge guidelines. Hopefully it will be brief, because we all know that these pauses have, historically, tend to cause more delays and backlogs, and that is the last thing we need right now. But remember, this is not a dead end, or a “ban”, it’s just a temporary pause.
